('Luddites' - people violently opposed to technical change)

Last year Class 5 had as their history topic 'The Luddites'.  We became involved with the local Civic Society who had created a memorial to the Luddites in 2012 at the top of Knowler Hill, Liversedge.  One of the Society's members visited school to share their knowledge and the opportunity arose for the class to produce some artwork for a new plaque on Cartwright Street, Liversedge.

It has taken some time for the plaque to be completed, however in early September Class 6 received an invite from the Civic Society to attend the unveiling of the new plaque, which of course incorporated their art work from last year.

The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story of the battle that took place at Cartwrights Mill (known now as Rawfolds Mill) and looking again at the clothes that would have been worn at that time.  They are very proud of their artwork which is now on display for all to see.

If you would like to find out more about the Luddites click here and find out more about history in our local area, or why not visit the Spen Valley Civic Society site as they have a wealth of interesting information.

ITV covered the unveiling of the statue in 2012, if you missed it click on this link and take a look.
